Focal — Privacy Policy

Last updated: August 16, 2026

Focal ("the extension") is a browser extension that converts webpage text into bionic reading format to help people focus while reading. This policy explains what data the extension does and does not handle.

What Focal does on your device

Focal reads the visible text on the pages you visit in order to reformat it (applying bold styling to the leading portion of each word). This processing happens entirely inside your browser, on your device.

What data we collect

None. Focal does not transmit page content, browsing history, or any personally identifiable information to any server. We do not operate an analytics or tracking backend for the extension's core reading feature.

What is stored locally

Focal uses Chrome's built-in storage API to remember your preferences (on/off state, bold intensity, color mode) on the device you set them on, optionally synced across your own signed-in Chrome browsers via Google's account sync. This data never leaves Google's standard sync infrastructure and is never sent to us.

Permissions we request, and why

Payments (Pro upgrade)

If you choose to upgrade to Focal Pro, payment is processed by our payment provider (Stripe/ExtensionPay). We do not receive or store your card details. We receive confirmation of your purchase and the email address you provide at checkout, used solely to activate your license and send purchase-related communication.

Children's privacy

Focal is not directed at children under 13 and does not knowingly collect data from them.
